In the late 15th century, Jews and Muslims were expelled from both Spain and Portugal. The expulsion was an attack on centuries of conviviality, and the first systematic attempt in the modern world to shape a new body politic based on cleansing it from undesired groups. What was left in Portugal from centuries of life of Muslims and Jews? In preparation of my presentation, I invite students and faculty alike to send me photos of different objects, elements, images, food, plants, buildings, or descriptions of idioms, professions, occupations that survived the expulsion and became part of the life in Portugal.
Here is a link to a text that describes my practice of “Errata” that can inspire the exploration of your close environment to see if you recognize anything from centuries of Muslim-Jewish-Christian conviviality: https://alinejournal.com/
